Everest Base Camp Trek

Rating:

The Everest Base Camp Trek is an epic journey that takes you to the 'Roof of the World' and a chance to experience the adventures of Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay who scaled the peak in 1953. Besides, such a historical significance in mountaineering terms, it takes you to the heartland of the world-renowned Khumbu Region and home to the hardy mountaineers, the Sherpas. Other prominent features of this trek are the Sagarmatha National Park - a World Heritage Site, Tengboche Monastery – the highest monastery in the Khumbu Region of Nepal, climbing Kala Pathar – a spectacular vantage point to view Everest and its surrounding giants.  This trek also enables you to view four of the world's six tallest peaks; Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. In terms of wildlife, you may chance to spot Musk Deer, Thar, Blue Sheep and the elusive and fairly recently encountered elusive Snow Leopard. Also, a diverse species of Himalayan Fowls like the Munal, Kalij and Danfe ( Pheasants ) infest the region.

The trek begins with a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla airport ( the airport is an outcrop on a hill and the approach and landing is a spectacular one ). Then it is on to Namche the commercial and tourist hub of the region.

The trek can vary from anything between 14 – 18 days; this depends on the duration of stay, fitness levels and the route one chooses to take. A 16 day Everest Base Camp Trek is ideally suited for fairly fit beginners that allows steady acclimatization due to the distance covered between daily itineraries. The Everest Base Camp Trek Via Gokyo Lake is an 18 Day "Off the Beaten Track" which offers a more challenging route. Experienced trekkers with time constraints can opt for the 14 Day Everest Base Camp Short Trek.

Soon after, we will arrive at the Sagarmatha National Park to get our permit checked, descend the Dudh Koshi River on our way to Jorsale. After lunch and Jorsale we ascend towards Namche Bazaar. Our trail along side the river bank is flanked by two crossings ( one of them is the Hillary Suspension Bridge. Though it is a strenuous climb up to Namche, we will be rewarded with our first sighting of Everest in all its stupendous glory.

Day 04 – Namche Bazaar ( 3440 m ) – Rest and Acclimatization

Namche is the threshold for this trek and we are given a very needed day of rest and acclimatization to such elevation. To further expedite your acclimatization, a two hour hike from here will take to Everest View Point; or you could simply spend your time browsing around Namche Bazaar. A visit to the Sherpa Museum will give you an insight into Sherpa culture and the history of mountaineering in the region.. Saturdays are reserved for the 'Haat Bazaar' and is an interesting occasion to sample the buzz of trading activity of the market place. A hearty breakfast at Namche Bazaar will ensure our push towards Everest Base Camp. Amazing views of the Himalayan giants like Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kwangde. A short descent will take us down to the riverside from where we will cross the river to head upwards through the forest pass. You need to physically and mentally prepare yourself for a continuous ascent at this stage, varying between gradual to some challenging steep climbs. Our reward will be one of the most enchanting places in the Everest Region, Tengboche. The view from here, including that of Ama Dablam, are stupendous. The ensuing straight trail to EBC is tougher and takes you through rocky dunes and moraine ( accumulation of glacial debris ). As we head towards our destination, we will encounter the Khumbu Glacier and ice fall on the slopes of Everest. If it happens to be spring, you will chance upon climbers either heading for the summit or making preparations for their ascent. A photo op is in the cards for some stunning views. As the sun drops low, we will make our way back to Gorakshep for a well deserved rest.
